The Work
Primary: Repair is brakes, steering, suspension, radiators, water pumps, starters and alternators, belts, timing chains, etc. On a hoist & pit bay with a front bay deck cover. Not a diagnostic-only seat.
Secondary: Oil changes and simple maintenance, including slow weeks. Experienced technicians do both.

Pay
Your pay rate is set by experience and ASE certifications.
Repair work is paid flat-rate at that rate. A water pump flagged at 6 hours pays 6 hours if you finish in 4 because you are efficient. It still pays 6 hours if the job runs long.
Hourly is the floor, not a second check. If flat-rate pay for the time spent would fall below your hourly minimum, you get the minimum, which would be greater. You do not get both.
Maintenance and oil changes are paid at the hourly rate: $14 to $18.
Repair flat-rate, with that floor, runs $21 to $48. The top is not a starting wage and not a guarantee.

The Path
ASE certification is an edge here because almost no one local is earning it. We support the tests. More certs move you toward foreman, then toward running a bay. If you later leave for a bigger city, the certs go with you. Staying in the same stall at the same rate does not.
